Cumbria's Air Conditioning Specialists

Comfort you don't have to think about — from Whitehaven to Windermere.

Cumbrian summers aren't what they used to be. The last three years have all seen prolonged 30°C spells reach as far north as Carlisle, and offices, shopfloors and family homes across the county have discovered the hard way that leaving a window open doesn't really cut it any more.

A properly sized, properly installed air conditioning system fixes that in an afternoon — and the good ones do it while trimming your winter heating bill through heat-pump mode.

Northern Gale installs, services and repairs air conditioning for every kind of Cumbrian building — from Grade II farmhouses toward Cockermouth to busy Kendal restaurants and Barrow-in-Furness warehouses. Whether you need one quiet unit for a bedroom or a full VRF system across three floors, we design, install and look after it — same engineers, first survey to five-year aftercare.

Modern air conditioning installation
Domestic & Commercial

Two teams, one standard.

Whether it's a single split in a bedroom or a rooftop VRF for a fifty-desk office, the same F-Gas certified engineers do the survey, the install and the aftercare.

For Homeowners

Domestic Air Conditioning

Modern residential air conditioning is worlds away from the noisy hotel-corridor units of twenty years ago. Systems from Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic and Toshiba now run as quiet as 19 dB — quieter than a library.

Their heat-pump mode delivers three to four kilowatts of heat for every one kilowatt of electricity, making them cheaper to run than gas or oil boilers across a Cumbrian winter on all but the coldest days.

  • Wall-mounted single-room splits for bedrooms and home offices
  • Multi-split systems serving three to five rooms from one outdoor unit
  • Concealed cassettes for period properties and listed buildings
  • Air-to-air heat pumps for heating first, cooling as a bonus
Commercial office air conditioning
For Businesses

Commercial Air Conditioning

Cumbria's commercial buildings are a mixed bag — Georgian offices in Carlisle, retail units in Kendal, restaurants around Bowness, warehouses in Barrow, hotels around the Lakes. Each has its own air conditioning challenge.

We design and install commercial systems for retail, hospitality, offices, light industrial, server rooms, care homes and GP surgeries. Every project comes with full F-Gas paperwork, warranties and a maintenance schedule tailored to your operating pattern.

  • Retail & hospitality — inverter-driven splits and cassettes
  • Offices — scalable VRF systems from 5 kW to 100 kW and above
  • Restaurants — filtered systems with kitchen extract integration
  • Warehouses — industrial Mitsubishi Mr Slim and Toshiba systems
  • Server rooms — N+1 precision cooling with 24/7 remote monitoring
The Range

Systems we install across Cumbria.

Approved installers for the leading names in the industry. We specify the equipment that fits your building — never the equipment that happens to be sitting in the van.

Wall-Mounted Splits

Best for single rooms up to 40 m². Quick to install, near-silent on low-fan, and cost-effective. The most common domestic and small-office choice across Cumbria.

Ceiling Cassettes

Discreet units mounted flush into suspended ceilings with four-way airflow. The go-to for offices, retail units and restaurants where visible boxes aren't wanted.

Multi-Split Systems

One outdoor unit runs between two and eight indoor heads. Perfect for family homes with several bedrooms, small guesthouses or terraced shopfronts sharing an outside wall.

VRF Systems

Variable Refrigerant Flow — one outdoor unit feeding up to 32 indoor units, each independently controlled. The right answer for offices above 15 kW total load.

Ducted Systems

Concealed above suspended ceilings with only the grilles visible from below. Ideal where interior design matters — hotels, restaurants, high-end offices and listed properties.

Floor-Mounted Units

Good for period buildings, low-slung sash windows or spaces where wall and ceiling installation isn't possible. Also popular in conservatories and orangeries.

Where We Work

Genuinely local — every corner of Cumbria.

We're not a national contractor with a call centre. When Northern Gale fits your air conditioning, the engineers are twenty minutes down the road, not twenty hours. Our vans are on the road across Cumbria every day of the working week.

Common Questions

Air conditioning in Cumbria — honest answers.

How much does air conditioning installation cost in Cumbria?

A single-room wall-mounted split installed is typically £1,600–£2,400 including VAT, depending on the manufacturer and how far the pipework has to run. Multi-split systems covering a whole house are usually £4,500–£9,000. Commercial VRF systems are always quoted individually after an on-site survey — but as a rough guide, expect £2,000–£3,500 per indoor unit for a mid-sized office fit-out.

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

In most Cumbrian properties, no. Outdoor units mounted under 1.7 metres away from a property boundary, and not attached to a listed building or sited in a conservation area, are permitted development under UK planning rules. For Grade II listed properties — of which we have plenty in Cumbria — we handle the listed building consent application on your behalf as part of the quote.

Can air conditioning also heat my home in winter?

Yes. Every system we install runs in heat-pump mode. Modern inverter compressors deliver roughly 3–4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity down to about 2°C outdoor temperature, and still around 2 kW per kW at −5°C. For the majority of the Cumbrian winter that's cheaper heating than gas or oil, and considerably cleaner.

How long does installation take?

Single-room domestic installs are usually completed in a day. Whole-house multi-split systems take two to three days depending on cable and pipework runs. Commercial VRF projects run anywhere from one to three weeks depending on scale, ceiling access and how many trades we're coordinating with.

What manufacturers do you use?

We're accredited installers for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba, LG, Panasonic and Samsung — the top names in the industry. We pick the manufacturer to suit the building rather than the other way round. Daikin and Mitsubishi lead on residential and light-commercial; Toshiba's Industrial Series is our default for warehouses; LG has a strong small-cassette range for retail.

Do you offer finance?

Yes, on installations over £2,000. We work with recognised UK finance partners and can arrange 0% options subject to status. Details on request during the quote stage.
